THE GREAT ESCAPE FROM AGRA !
SHIVAJI, the great Hindu king in India, escaped from the clutches of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb at Agra in 1666 AD. This website gives brief information (extracted from the published book) on how Shivaji escaped from Agra, based on in-depth research using original historical documents, the psychology of Shivaji, Aurangzeb and his Mansabdars, political and social practices in the Moghul court and empire, climate during that period, various land routes of communication used at that time, terrain or actual geography, modes of transport, and various important events.
This website contains excerpts from the published book in Marathi language "Agryahun Sutka".
Till today, no historical researcher had put forward a plausible explanation of how Shivaji and Sambhaji escaped from Agra. Most of the erstwhile historians, including Mr. Setumadhavrao Pagadi, had explained in detail that the myth of their escape through big wooden sweet boxes was just an eyewash!! However, these historians had not proposed any alternative methodology and route of escape which logically interpreted all the available evidence on the subject.
DR. AJIT JOSHI has put together all the available evidence about the historical event and interpreted it without any bias. This new interpretation and analysis of Shivaji's escape from Agra takes in to account all the historical facts (supported by documentary evidence) and also does not leave any evidence unexplained. The personalities or personal behavioural characteristics of Shivaji, Aurangzeb and others have also been taken in to consideration in this analysis, probably for the first time in the interpretation of Maratha History. This research has resolved the more than 330-years-old mystery which is dramatic and has fascinated Maharashtrians - the Marathi-speaking population, Indians, as well as many foreign historians, through the centuries!
